How do stun devices work?

A stun device works by creating electrical pulses that send the nerve cells that control the muscles into chaos. Stun devices use high voltage and low amperage to deliver electrical charge to the point of contact on an attacker. There is no kick back from these devices and the voltage cannot pass through the device or the attacker if they touch you. 

What is the difference between a stun device and a TASER?

Stun devices are self-defense tools, while TASER is a brand. TASER devices fire projectiles which can incapacitate an assailant. Stun devices are pain compliance tools which only function by making direct contact with an assailant. 

What is in pepper spray?

The active ingredient in Damsel in Defense pepper spray is OC (oleoresin capsicum). The OC is derived from cayenne peppers, which are some of the hottest peppers in the world. Extraction of OC from peppers involves finely ground capsicum, then the capsicum is extracted in an organic solvent such as ethanol. The solvent is then evaporated, and the remaining wax-like resin is the OC. 

What are the effects of pepper spray?

Contact with eyes, nose, throat and lungs causes immediate dilation of the capillaries. This can result in temporary blindness and instant inflammation of the breathing tube tissues and systematically cuts off all but life-support breathing. Pepper spray will also create an intense burning sensation on the surface of the skin. However, pepper spray will cause no lasting after-effects. The effects last from 15 to 60 minutes, allowing you to escape from harm’s way. Because pepper spray is an inflammatory agent and not an irritant, it is effective on those who feel no pain, such as those under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 

What is SHU?

The SHU (scoville heat units) scale indicates the amount of MC (Major Capsaicinoids) present, but more importantly the heat and thus irritation the pepper spray delivers. When considering which pepper spray is most effective, one must consider the percentage of pepper being used and the heat rating of that pepper (measured in SHU). At 1.45% MC and two million SHU, the potency of Damsel in Defense pepper spray enables it to bring down even the most aggressive attacker.
